Kok Kiya Valley

Kok Kiya Valley is a breathtaking alpine valley located in the Naryn region of eastern Kyrgyzstan, close to the Chinese border. It lies at an altitude of around 3,000 meters and is surrounded by majestic mountain ranges, crystal-clear rivers, and endless green pastures. The name “Kok Kiya” means “Blue Pass” in Kyrgyz, reflecting the valley’s striking color tones and pure mountain air.

This remote valley is one of the last untouched areas of Kyrgyzstan, making it ideal for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures. During summer, nomadic herders set up their traditional yurts across the valley, living in harmony with nature as they graze their livestock on the rich pastures. Visitors can stay in these yurts to experience the authentic Kyrgyz nomadic lifestyle — taste fresh mare’s milk (kumis), learn about local traditions, and enjoy the simplicity of mountain life.

Kok Kiya is also the main access route to the Kel-Suu Lake, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most spectacular hidden gems. The journey from the valley to Kol-Suu takes travelers through dramatic canyons, rocky gorges, and scenic grasslands where wildflowers bloom from June to September. The area is rich in wildlife — it’s possible to spot eagles, marmots, and even ibex among the cliffs.

Because of its remoteness, Kok Kiya Valley is best visited with a 4×4 vehicle or on horseback. The road to the valley itself is an adventure — crossing small rivers and winding through mountain passes with panoramic views at every turn.

For photographers, hikers, and nature lovers, Kok Kiya offers endless opportunities to explore and connect with the wild heart of Kyrgyzstan. Nights here are especially magical — with no light pollution, the sky fills with millions of stars.

Best time to visit:
