Kazhyrty Waterfall (also called Son-Kul Waterfall, Gürkürötmö, etc.), is a striking high-mountain cascade located near Song Kul Lake in Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the scenic highlights on the route to Song Kul, with powerful water flow especially in the spring melt season. Because it is less well known, the waterfall has a somewhat mysterious and off-the-beaten-path feel — ideal for nature lovers, trekkers, and adventurous travelers.
How to Reach It
-
The waterfall lies on the route between Naryn (via Dolon Pass) and Song Kul Lake.
-
After descending from Song Kul via the Terskey-Torpok Pass, there is a point on the right side (when coming down) where a shady trail leads from the road toward the waterfall.
-
The access trail is relatively short (~1 km), but involves some steep parts.
-
Because the waterfall is somewhat remote, having a local guide or a driver familiar with the area is helpful.
Tips for Visitors
-
Wear good footwear. The trail has steep and rocky sections; non-slip shoes or hiking boots are recommended.
-
Timing matters. The waterfall is most dramatic during snowmelt (late spring / early summer). In dryer months the flow may be lower.
-
Weather & conditions. At 2,600 m, conditions can change fast. Be prepared for cold wind, rain, or fog.
-
Photography. The contrast between the cascading water and the steep canyon walls offers excellent photo opportunities, especially when light filters through.
-
Respect nature. Leave no trace: take out what you bring in, avoid damaging vegetation or rock faces.
-
Safety. Avoid getting too close to the lip or edges, especially in wet conditions.
