The lake is flanked by imposing snow-capped peaks, notably Peak Korona (4,738 meters/15,548 feet) and Peak Ala Kol (4,845 meters/15,896 feet), and is fed by glacial meltwater.

Ala Kol Lake may be reached most frequently via trekking from the village of Karakol, which typically takes 3–4 days round trip.
