In the Chüy Valley in northern Kyrgyzstan, there is a sizable minaret known as the Burana Tower. It lies close to the town of Tokmok, some 80 kilometers east of Bishkek, the capital of the nation. All that’s left of the old city of Balasagun, which the Karakhanids founded at the end of the 9th century, is the tower, some earthworks, burial markers, and the ruins of a castle and three mausoleums. The tower served as a model for later minarets when it was constructed in the eleventh century. Visitors can reach the summit by an exterior staircase and a narrow, steep stairway within the tower. It is among Central Asia’s earliest architectural structures.
