Burana Tower, Suyab and Balasagun

Kyrgyzstan is known not for its ancient mausoleums, but for its virgin mountains, alpine lakes, and green pastures.

However, there are a few cool historical sites scattered throughout the country. One of the most interesting (and definitely the most accessible) of these is Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret that lies just 60 km east of Bishkek. This minaret is one of the last remaining vestiges of the ancient city of Balasagun, the former capital of the Karakhanid Khanate.

Suyab & Balasagun

Before there was Balasagun, there was Suyab. Settled around the 5th century CE, the city was home to Sogdian traders and an early Turkic khaganate for a good century. It became part of the Chinese Tang empire in the 7th and 8th centuries, before it returned to Turkic hands for good.

During the Tang period, the city possibly gave birth to Kyrgyzstan’s most famous son, Li Bai. Unknown to Kyrgyz ears, he is revered in the Chinese-speaking world as the greatest of poets, popular to this day.

In the 11th century, Suyab was abandoned for nearby Balasagun, where the Burana Tower still stands. The ruins and archaeological excavations of Suyab are now called Ak-Beshim, located around 15 km from Burana.

The minaret originally stood 45 m tall, but an earthquake in the 15th century destroyed the upper half of the tower, and it now tops out at 24m. Still, it’s quite an impressive structure. Like many monumental brick constructions from this era, the minaret leans ever so slightly to one side.

That it has survived complete destruction in one of the most seismically active regions in the world testifies to its structural robustness.

Itinerary

09:00 – Depart from Bishkek and drive to Tokmok (1.5 hours).
10:30 – Explore the Burana Tower Complex, the remains of ancient Balasagun, once a thriving Karakhanid city. Climb the minaret, visit the museum, and see the open-air collection of stone balbals and petroglyphs.
12:00 – Continue to Suyab near Ak-Beshim village, an important Silk Road city with ancient Buddhist and fortress ruins.
13:30– Lunch in Tokmok at a local café with traditional Kyrgyz dishes.
15:00 – Drive back to Bishkek, arriving around 17:30–18:00.

We had the most amazing time in the crisp air of Kyrgyzstan. Aibek was a wonderful guide who adapted the trip to suit us. The company are so lovely and personable. It was our wedding anniversary trip and they went above and beyond to ensure we had a lonely time. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough!!

My friends and i had a long journey for 6 days with kyrgyz trip and it is very worth it! All of the places we’ve been both lakes and mountains are so amazing and beautiful. Even we’ve been here for many days, we never get bored of the views of nature. I would like to recommend everyone to visit this country once in your life and specially thank you for our tour guide Billy who always took care of us and created an unforgettable tour.
Had a great time with Tari El. The scenery is very beautiful. Journey from one attraction to another is far away but having Tari El as our driver, like fast and furious. Will come back again

Our trip to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan with this tour company was nothing short of extraordinary. The itinerary provided a comprehensive exploration of both countries, including not only the planned attractions but also delightful surprises with side trips to additional attractions. The natural beauty of the region, from Skazka Canyon to Issyk Kul Lake, Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes, Charyn Canyon, and Shymbulak Mountain Resort, left a lasting impression.

The accommodations, particularly in Tamga Village and Saty Village, provided a comfortable retreat from the cold climate, with fantastic views adding to the overall experience. The warmth and hospitality of the local people, coupled with delicious homecooked meals, enriched our journey.

However, what truly made our trip memorable was the enthusiastic and accommodating guide, Aibek. His willingness to cater to our preferences, stop for impromptu photo opportunities, and facilitate immersive experiences like picnics amidst stunning landscapes truly enhanced the trip. The road trip from Bishkek to Almaty, with its nomadic-style stays and spontaneous moments, added an adventurous flair to the journey.

Overall, our experience with this tour company was exceptional, leaving us with cherished memories and a desire to return, perhaps during the autumn season. My review highlights the company's ability to curate unforgettable experiences and provide excellent service, thanks in large part to the dedication of guides like Aibek.
